For users of FXHome Products
FXHOME makes an excellent selection of compositing software specifically for the budget-concious filmmaker. We've been in contact with them regarding specific instructions for using their products with our footage, and we will post their helpful responses here.

-Compositing black-BG footage in CompositeLab and VisionLab Studio-
When using stock footage with a black back ground you need to change the
composite blending method. 'Blending' refers to how the object is
composited into the shot.
An object's composite blend setting can be changed in the 'Object
properties' inspector. This can be accessed by clicking on the object's
title track in the timeline track listing.
The default setting is 'Normal'. Changing this to 'Add' or 'Screen' will
result in the black being removed from your clip, enabling you to
realistically composite explosions/fire/etc.

-Compositing white-BG footage in CompositeLab and VisionLab Studio-
CompositeLab and VisionLab Studio are designed for full
compositing and offer a wide range of blend types, including multiply.
Here's a quick list of the available types:
Normal
Add
Color burn
Color dodge
Darken
Difference
Exclusion
Hard light
Lighten
Multiply
Overlay
Screen
Soft light
There's also a specific 'value key' you can use, which I believe is the
same as the luma key you mention in tutorials.
