Flame Elements Demo from Bob Forward on Vimeo.

We used a number of the elements on this page to create the above clip. DetFilms VP John Forward took a break from uploading orders and blowing things up to stand in front of the camera for this shot. The original footage is shown in the inset; the final footage has Burning Timbers, Burning Brush, Embers, Spot Fires and Blowing Dust added in post. All work was done in Final Cut Pro.

DV BLOWING DUST!

Blowing dust was one of the very first effects we ever shot, and you can still find the original disk here. It has been absolutely the best stuff ever -- it improves almost any shot. Seriously. You can take a still photo of a deserted street, add some blowing dust, and it looks like live post-apocalyptic footage. It also responds very well to being sped up or slowed down with simple frame blending. Since we have a better camera now, and better lighting, it was time to shoot new dust. Just screen it in -- you want to barely see it in most cases. Just something to give atmosphere.

We finally found a bunch of tempered glass sheets and spent a Manly Night with Glass, Camera, Lights, and Slingshot smashing them to flinders. John, who was operating the camera, had to keep diving out of the way. We ended up with almost twenty pounds of broken glass, and nine great clips from various angles so that you won't have to smash your own. DV BURNING TIMBERS

Something else unique we've come up with. Drop the pre-keyed image of the timbers in the lower track (we also include a Chroma version in case the pre-keyed version doesn't work with your software) and then SCREEN the flame layer in the upper track. The flames match the shape of the timbers perfectly. Try it out! We've included a freebee for your pleasure.

DV BURNING BUSHES

Similar to the Timbers above, but the bushes are blowing in the wind so both layers have to be video. Use your LUMA key for the bottom (bush) layer, and SCREEN the flames on top for a marvelous effect. After the bush layer is keyed, you can add a progressive Gamma Adjust to turn the brush blacker over the length of the burn. These were also used in the video atop the page.

FLAMETHROWERS!

We kept getting requests for flamethrower footage, so we finally decided to make some. It's admittedly possible to do flamethrower effects without building an actual flamethrower, but where's the fun in that? Here's a photo of John testing the Mark 1.
